Render of the Rockslice cutting rig: power unit, hose and robotic sword saw against a rock wall

Overview

Rockslice builds explosive-free robotic rock and concrete cutting, and won Norway’s National Startup Award in 2024. I work there full time as the first engineering hire, owning design, prototyping and testing of the cutting platform, from mechanical design and suppliers to firmware debugging and customer requirements. Alongside this I am pursuing an industrial PhD through NTNU’s Field Robotics Lab, in partnership with Rockslice, on advanced control and material sensing for the platform.

  • Built up the lab and machine shop; installed and programmed a Haas VF-2SS CNC mill
  • Sourced motion hardware and managed suppliers for machined and metal 3D-printed parts
  • Debugged firmware and Modbus communication on the in-house custom control board
  • Defined requirements with customers and pitched the company to investors
  • Leading the company’s first customer pilot project (December 2026)
  • Pursuing an NTNU industrial PhD on control and material sensing for the cutting platform

The challenge

Rockslice’s patented water-turbine sword saw needed to become practical to build and deploy. I redesigned it to be 10× cheaper, cut its weight from 20 to 10 kg and increased cut depth from 1 to 1.5 m, then designed a 3-DoF robotic sword positioner for flush, square-cornered cuts in confined spaces.
