Surgical robotics · Johnson & Johnson
Ottava

Overview
Ottava is Johnson & Johnson’s soft-tissue surgical robot. I worked on it as a mechanical engineer at Ethicon (formerly Auris Health) in Santa Clara, after an internship there in 2018. I designed, tested and implemented robotic subsystems, and diagnosed and debugged system-level mechanical and software issues in clinical settings.
The challenge
I was project lead of the surgeon console immobilization system, which is now patented (US20230390010A1, WO2023238053A1). I also managed the capital equipment packaging project as team lead, designed and coordinated manufacturing of PCB and optical test fixtures, and supported surgical procedure development in the lab.
